What they are: Google AI Overviews are generated summaries that appear above the traditional organic results, answering the query directly and citing a handful of sources. For many informational and local-intent searches they are now the first and sometimes only thing a person reads.

Why this matters more than it sounds

The AI Overview does not push you to position two. It pushes the entire organic list below the fold on a phone. A user who gets a satisfactory answer in the Overview frequently never scrolls, which means the value of ranking first collapses toward the value of being cited in the Overview.

For a Sydney service business, the queries most affected are exactly the ones you care about: “best X in Sydney,” “how much does X cost,” “do I need X,” and “X near me.”

How Google picks sources

Google has not published the selection mechanism, and anyone presenting one as fact is speculating. What is observable from repeated testing:

  • Cited pages usually rank already. Overviews draw heavily from pages already performing in conventional results. Conventional SEO is the entry ticket.
  • Passages, not pages, get selected. A specific paragraph that answers the question cleanly is what gets lifted. A page that is comprehensive but diffuse often loses to a thinner page with a crisper paragraph.
  • Structured data helps disambiguate. It does not force inclusion, but it removes the guesswork about what your business is.
  • Local results lean on the Business Profile. For “near me” style queries, your Google Business Profile, categories and reviews carry disproportionate weight.
  • Freshness matters more than it used to. Dated content is visibly deprioritised for anything time-sensitive.

Seven things to do, in order

1. Find out whether you already appear

Search your top ten commercial queries in an incognito window set to your service area. Record whether an Overview appears, who it cites, and whether you are among them. This is your baseline and it takes under an hour.

2. Let the crawlers in

Check yoursite.com/robots.txt. Confirm you are not blocking Google-Extended or Googlebot. Blocking Google-Extended specifically opts you out of Gemini and some AI surfaces while leaving normal search intact, which is a trade-off most local businesses do not intend to make.

3. Add real structured data

At minimum: LocalBusiness or the appropriate subtype, Service for what you sell, and FAQPage for your common questions. Validate it in Google's Rich Results Test. A plugin's default output is usually incomplete.

4. Restructure your pages around questions

Convert vague headings into the question a customer would type, and answer it in the sentence immediately underneath. “Our Services” becomes “What does an emergency plumber cost in Sydney?” followed directly by a number and a range.

5. Publish the specifics everyone else hides

Prices, timeframes, suburbs served, what is excluded. Vague pages cannot be quoted, so they are not selected. Specific pages get lifted verbatim. This is uncomfortable for a lot of businesses and it is the highest-leverage change on this list.

6. Fix your Google Business Profile properly

Correct primary category, complete service list, real opening hours, recent photos, and an active flow of reviews. For local-intent queries this is the single largest input.

7. Re-measure monthly

Re-run the exact queries from step one. Keep the verbatim text. Movement in this channel is slow and lumpy, and without a record you will not be able to tell progress from noise.

What does not work

There is no paid placement in an AI Overview. There is no submission form. No agency has a relationship that gets you included, and the handful of “guaranteed AI Overview placement” offers circulating in the Australian market are selling something they cannot deliver.

Stuffing a page with question headings while leaving the answers vague also does not work, and tends to damage conventional rankings at the same time.
